Installing Luxury Vinyl Flooring

can be a DIY project for those with some experience in home improvement, but for the best results, it’s recommended to hire a professional installer.

Here’s a general overview of the installation process:

  1. Prepare the Subfloor: Ensure the subfloor is clean, dry, level, and free from any imperfections. If needed, repair or patch the subfloor before proceeding.
  2. Acclimate the Flooring: Let the luxury vinyl planks or tiles acclimate to the room’s temperature and humidity for at least 48 hours before installation. This helps prevent issues with expansion and contraction after installation.
  3. Measure and Plan: Measure the room’s dimensions to determine how much flooring you’ll need. Plan the layout to ensure a balanced appearance and minimize waste.
  4. Start with a Clean Slate: Remove any baseboards, trim, or obstacles in the room. It’s usually easier to install the flooring without these in place.
  5. Underlayment (optional): Depending on the type of luxury vinyl flooring and the subfloor, you may need to install an underlayment. Some luxury vinyl products come with a built-in underlayment, while others require a separate foam or cork underlayment.
  6. Lay the First Row: Start laying the luxury vinyl planks or tiles from a corner of the room, leaving a small expansion gap between the flooring and the walls (typically 1/4 inch). Use spacers to maintain the gap.
  7. Install the Flooring: For click-and-lock luxury vinyl flooring, interlock the planks or tiles as you proceed. For glue-down or loose-lay types, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific installation method.
  8. Cutting and Fitting: Measure and cut the planks or tiles as needed to fit around obstacles, corners, and edges. A utility knife or vinyl cutter can be used for this purpose.
  9. Continue Installation: Work row by row, ensuring that the planks or tiles are properly aligned and fit snugly together. Use a tapping block and rubber mallet for click-and-lock flooring to secure the connections.
  10. Finishing Touches: Install transition pieces, baseboards, and trim to cover expansion gaps and provide a polished look.
  11. Clean-Up: Remove any adhesive residue or debris from the installation process, ensuring a clean and tidy finish.
